What Is The Night?

Blood Will Have Blood

Great literature has the ability to entertain as well as to educate. Those who have the time and patience to take on the florid language of Shakespeare will find wisdom there. In act 3, right in the middle of the play, Macbeth remarks, “It will have blood: they say, blood will have blood.” Holding the status of a thane, he had nefariously entertained his king then looked into his eyes when, goaded by Lady Macbeth, he stabbed him and murdered him in his bed in the pre-dawn twilight. Now, himself king, Macbeth realizes, perhaps recalling the Old Testament’s “eye for an eye,” that he will eventually be made to atone for his wanton murder.

This passage resonates with the situation in Gaza today. I have many questions about the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. Did Hamas not expect such swift and violent retaliation from Israel? If not, why not? Jimmy Carter held that Israel is an apartheid state where Palestinians have lived in significantly poorer conditions than the state of Israel. Therefore, was this attack born out of blind desperation? Or was an outside actor—someone whose country might have benefited from an Israeli-Palestinian conflict—involved? Vladimir Putin, highly adept in tactics of geo-politics, would definitely want to have world and specifically American attention focussed on something other the Russian assault on Ukraine. I have read that Benjamin Netanjahu knew about Hamas preparations for the attack, but did might he have somehow encouraged it? Such encouragement would provide him with an irrefutable reason for the complete destruction of Gaza and its people.

This leads to further questions. Will the attack on Gaza protect Israel? Do we really think that in the weeks or months after the violence abates that Israel will be safe? Besides Gaza, Mr. Netanjahu has launched attacks in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Recent strikes form Iran show that Mr. Netanjahu has not been protecting Israel, but putting it in much more danger. Consequently, it may be said that the biggest enemy of Israel does not live in the occupied territories but in Jerusalem. Without a doubt, Israeli military operations in Gaza and elsewhere are harmful to Israel’s future. They also are fraying its alliance with the Uniter States. It is no secret that many of our most prominent politicians, both Republican and Democrat, owe their positions to AIPAC, the lobby which for decades has ensured that Israel is favored in all decisions. Now, with Israel’s relentless bombing and withholding of aid in Gaza, the US is allied with Israel to our own detriment.

With no cease fire in sight, the world watches with trepidation as this massive “blood will have blood” scenario plays out.

lyrics

It will have blood; they say, blood will have blood:
Stones have been known to move and trees to speak;
Augurs and understood relations have
By maggot-pies and choughs and rooks brought forth
The secret'st man of blood. What is the night?
-from Macbeth
