about

E/Gone is a piece for two cellos and pre-recorded tape. It employs quarter-tones. In concert, the end of E/Gone is accompanied by the projected image of a cellist weeping over his instrument in a graveyard. It was composed as an elegy for Egon Scotland, who was a Knight Fellow in journalism at Stanford University in 1989. He was a journalist for Munich’s Süddeutsche Zeitung. I studied the Serbo-Croatian language (as it was then called) in a class with him. On July 26, 1991, while trying to gather news of the war in the former Yugoslavia, he was shot and killed. He was killed at the height of the summer when the crickets were dizzyingly loud in two’s and three’s.
